The Ross-Carlisle Group Inc. - Applications Engineer

A Southwestern Ohio provider of leading edge CMM & Measurement Products seeks an Applications Engineer who can project a confident demeanor in him/herself and transfer that into the company product lines he/she is promoting. The Applications Engineer will be responsible for marketing and providing technical sales support for the company's line of products that will include conducting software & product training at customer facilities or at the company's headquarters, contract inspections, perform part programming assignments at customer facilities, etc.

The Chosen Applicant will be well versed in CMM technology and software with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to both customers and to the company's engineers. Qualified candidate will have a BS degree in engineering or related field and 3+ years of applications/sales/product engineering experience. Must be willing to travel extensively both nationwide and internationally. Must be a U.S. citizen or have a Green Card.

Salary will commensurate with experience; relocation package is available.

Western Digital - Platform Engineer

The primary role of the Platform Engineer is to function as the internal Champion or advocate for assigned customers and partners with the goal of ensuring first time right qualifications. The range of responsibilities include: understanding and driving customer requirements into the design and development process, meticulous interaction with field teams and customers before and during qualification activities, tracking and maintaining account specific requirements and documentation, driving acceptance criteria for qualification activities with the customer, analysis of test reports and failure analysis on returned products, driving recommended corrective action adoption, preparing documentation for inspection and testing procedures, and some domestic or international travel as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support business aligned customers and/or key partner assignments in Consumer Electronics and/or Enterprise market segments
  • Drive customer requirements gathering, filtering, negotiation, and implementation across product lines
  • Utilize customer technical meetings and alternative means to determine the Voice of the Customer (VOC)
  • Key specifications and features (customer sensitivities), meet or exceed requirements
  • Understand problems customers are trying to solve
  • Product environment, applications, and usage scenarios
  • Establish/refine customer qualification process including joint qualification
  • Key quality / reliability metrics sensitivities
  • Champion distillation of customer requirements into DRD input and Technology Staging projects
  • Facilitate competitive analysis for key attributes, performance, etc... and utilize data to support position on key specs & features
  • Drive gaps analysis and closure between customer specs/expectations and product features.
  • Ownership of strategic initiatives and projects to support relentless improvement, customer satisfaction
  • Dilligent and timely escalation and communication of critical issues
  • Manage product qualification process for assigned customers. Meet or exceed customer expectations with regard to cycle time, support, reporting and results of all testing.
  • Define qualification deliverables, processes, and metrics
  • Own & report qualification status updates
  • Owns (including definition of) CSTs, certain product validation tests and customer ready report outputs
  • Optimize cost of qualification
  • Customer Specific Test (CST) coordination and planning with internal resources
  • Failure Analysis tracking to closure and report generation
  • Customize product information and communication for the customer (weekly program status, etc.)
  • Customize design reviews (participate in design reviews as necessary to present customer unique status)
  • Drive EVT/FIT/Factory requirements
  • Own quality readiness assessment during qualification and ensures product transitions support customer quality metrics

HIGHLY DESIRED SKILLS:

Skills in a hands-on Applications engineer function is highly desirable for flexibility within the organization. The hard-drive Applications Engineer functions as one of the technical leaders driving characterization of hard- drive interfaces and developing in-depth customer system and end-user application usage knowledge. The engineer must be, technically skilled at analyzing systems and articulating HDD usage and associated stress conditions, capable of managing cross-functional teams within WD and with customer teams, skilled at driving joint qualification and failure analysis activities with major OEM customers, and proactive in driving the analysis of new customer hard- drive applications and commodities.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS degree in a related field or equivalent work experience and 8+ years of related experience, or MS degree in a related field or equivalent work experience and 6+ years of related experience, or PhD in related field or equivalent work experience and 4+ years of related experience
  • Knowledge of hard drive industry business environment, and challenges, products, competitors and suppliers
  • Good understanding of the practical implications of this role on operations
  • Broad knowledge of general business operations
  • 6-8 years of related disk drive experience in providing applications support and making technical presentations
  • Advanced technical knowledge of disk drives, including both IDE and SATA interfaces
  • Advanced knowledge of disk drives including both IDE, SATA, SAS, FC and SCSI interfaces
  • In-depth, hands on experience with state-of-the-art test hardware and software
  • Fundamental understanding of quality assurance processes and statistical tools as typically applied at quality and reliability test operations
